What do we mean by virtues?
A virtue is classically defined as an “excellence”, a quality that allows an object or a person to do their job well. We could say that a virtue of a knife is to be sharp, so that it cuts well. Likewise, a person is virtuous through different positive aspects of their personality and character that allow them to be good people.
We contrast our virtue with two vices. Vices are the negative parts of a given trait or attitude, which are understood to be either an excess or a deficiency of a virtue. How could the excess of a virtue be a bad thing? For example, let’s take Courage. Someone who is not courageous would be either have a deficiency (Cowardice) or have an excess (Rashness).
Notice how having “too much courage” isn’t considered a good thing. Remember the words of John Wayne, that “Courage is being scared to death and saddling up anyway”. In this way, we can understand that Courage is the mastery of ourselves through conquering our fears. If you aren’t feeling fear, it means you’re not being challenged and are thus not being courageous.
